As a writer who’s on a slow travel journey around Europe, much of the recent writing on this blog is about the places I’ve visited with my partner and slow travelling companion Sean M. Madden. When I’m not writing blog posts, I can be found huddled over my laptop or notebook writing short stories and poetry.
I’m also working on a book about our European travels, in which I intend to include the personal story of my experiences in Greece and Turkey, the lands of my ancestors. My grandfather was a fisherman from Antiparos and my grandmother a refugee from Istanbul, having been forced from her homeland during the 1923 ‘population exchange’ between Greece and Turkey.
In November 2012 I dipped my virtual ink into the NaNoWriMo well for the first time and, after 30 days of writing, I had written the requisite 50,000 words. Although my focus wasn’t on novel-writing, I decided to take part for the inspiration and motivation it provided, and to throw myself into writing draft chapters for my autobiographical travelogue.
